Introduction
to a Study of Intelligence
Intelligence is difficult to define, but it makes an exciting
topic for debate. It's a topic also that helps students
better understand their own talents and the talents of others,
especially when discussing the theory of Multiple Intelligences
as proposed by Howard Gardner. Besides links to MI theory,
this ALI resource guide features sites targeting practical
intelligence needed for school success, aptitude versus
achievement testing, artificial intelligence, intelligence
in orangutans, and gifted child education.
The
Theory of Multiple Intelligences
Multiple Intelligence Theory uses several distinct modes
of problem solving to explain human intelligence. This ALI
resource guide links to sites describing the theory, methods
and results of applying it in classrooms, and its implications
for the use of learning technology.
Constructivism:
An Active Theory of Learning
Although people disagree about how to achieve constructive
learning, constructive teaching is based on the belief that
students learn best when they gain knowledge through exploration
and active learning. Hands-on materials are used instead
of textbooks, and students are encouraged to think and explain
their reasoning instead of memorizing and reciting facts.
