Part Three of the Series
Diane Howard, Ph.D. continues to expand our understanding of the processes and instructional value of autobiographical Writing & Performing. In Part One, Dr. Howard shared with us an introduction to autobiographical performance. In Part Two she covers the positive role model effect. In this publication we include her advice for choosing historical figures appropriate for autobiographical presentations

Dr. Howard's Performance Studies students at Mary Hardin-Baylor University research, write, produce, and perform solo productions of  great historic or contemporary characters, which can be presented on platforms or on stages  for businesses, civic organizations, theaters, schools, libraries, museums, and/or churches.

An Example

In part one and two of this series we featured autobiographical performances by two of Dr. Howard's experienced students. We bring you a special treat in this example as Dr. Howard herself delivers a performance illustrating the character of Martha Washington. Available is an abbreviated version of a performance for which Dr. Howard is well known and one which she presents frequently. In the video segment you will see Dr. Howard play alternately the role of a tour guide and Martha Custis Washington. Be sure to also watch the additional examples which include the roles of the Elephant Man and a slave who personally experienced the underground railroad.

Application in the Classroom
This story gives us appreciation for the kind of sacrificial, public service that United States presidents and their wives have rendered. Teachers could ask questions such as the following to facilitate follow-up discussions.

  • What kinds of private sacrifices must governmental leaders make in their public service?
  • How can we show appreciation for their sacrifices?
  • Does each citizen have a social or public responsibility to serve his or her country?
  • If so, what kinds of public responsibilities does each citizen have?
  • Would such responsibilities require personal sacrifices?
