Coalwood West Virginia is distributed throughout a valley surrounded on all sides by steep tree covered mountains. Join us as we take you to some of the key sites in town and as we visit Cape Coalwood where the Rocket Boys tested their Auk rockets. When you are ready to see more, return to the scrapbook index.

A Coalwood Tour

    Apple Learning Interchange on wheels

Taking advantage of the roof top window, the ALI video team captured the people and places of Coalwood.

    You will know your here
The town of Coalwood welcomes the Rocket Boys along with the crowds that arrive to see them.

    Homer's street
The only problem with naming an avenue after Homer Hickam is people keep taking the sign for a souvenir.

    The Hickam Home
This is where the Homer and family lived. As the mine superintendent, Homer Hickam, Sr. was supported with a company owned home not far from the mine. The home is on Hwy 16 just across from the company store.

    And from the back

    Reverend "Little" Richard's church
The reverend played an important role as friend and mentor to Homer. Note the round windows and read how that got that way in The Coalwood Way.

    The Club House
The club house, now abandoned is described in Homer's works as the company hotel. The roof is where Jake gave the Rocket Boys access to his telescope.

    The middle / elementary school
Now burned out and abandoned, this is the school where the Rocket Boys began their schooling.

    The machine shop
The building with all of the windows served as the machine shop where the Rocket Boys had their nozzle's made when Homer Hickam Senior turned his back. To contract the same work out now, would cost thousands of dollars.
Cape Coalwood Revisited

    Turn here for Cape Coalwood
Cape Coalwood, was the launch site for the Rocket Boys.

    Fall colors
One advantage of holding October Sky in October is the beautiful fall colors. This is the road that we traveled down to reach Cape Coalwood.

The Block House and Launch Pad
No they are not the original, but they are functional!

    Just a few improvements
While the forest eventually reclaimed the slack dump, the Cape Coalwood Restoration Association has worked hard and now it is a beautiful grass covered park where rockets are still fired.
    Cape Coalwood
What hasn't changed are the Rocket eating trees that surround Cape Coalwood. Parachutes for your rocket may not be a good idea here.
