The Parade and Festival

    Peggy Blevins Leads the Parade

As the president of the Cape Coalwood Restoration Association, Peggy organized and promoted the October Sky Festival. The organization sponsors two events per year.

    The Rocket Boys Float
Well maybe a float it isn't, but a hay ride for a very special group including Homer, Bill Rose, O'Dell, and Roy Lee.

    A Closer Look
Jackets were in order as October in Coalwood turned out to be a little cool!

What is a parade without a band
The guest band not only marched but presented several numbers to initiate the formal part of the program.

    Coalwood Park
The parade concluded at the park where the opening ceremony began.

    Presentation Time
The official welcome included many dignitaries, some local and some from the state. Here we see Homer reading a plaque.

    Apple Butter
This crew added to the flavor of the event by brewing up a giant kettle of Apple Butter. They were more than happy to tell everyone the process and even had a few completed jars available.

    Shuttle Display
a special "long term loan" to Coalwood from Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, Alabama. often called rocket City USA and where Homer Hickam had his NASA career.

    The Book Signing Table
After the opening ceremony, Homer, Billy, O'dell, and Roy Lee spent seven hours signing copies of Homer's new book, The Coalwood Way.
    The Line
The line stretched the full length of the park. O'dell helped by walking the line and signing!
