"African Voices celebrates Africa as a historic and living entity with contemporary and future relevance. It demonstrates how African cultures have spread worldwide becoming a part of the very fabric of American life and encourages people to look beyond the existing stereotypes and assumptions about Africa and Africans."

African stories are told through more than 400 objects from the museum’s collection as well as photographs, film, video interactives and sound stations. The voices of African people are central to the exhibition and each story comes to life through cultural proverbs and adages with actual commentary from historical and living persons.

From the emergence of human life five million years ago through the liberation of South Africa in 1994, Africans have tackled life’s challenges as they have faced failure and success, tragedy and triumph. They have built thriving cities and powerful empires. They have developed complex religions and philosophies. They have developed technology and traded with neighbors near and far.

In these Electronic Field Trips, students will learn about central themes in Africa’s vast, rich history and contemporary vitality. Special emphasis will be placed on:

  • Contemporary Music
  • Africa's Historic struggle for self determination
  • Diversity + vitality of contemporary life in Somalia
  • Valuable goods, ideas and relationships as examples of wealth in Ghana today.
