What Is An Insect?

In the animal kingdom, insects are the class called Insecta. Insecta have three pairs of legs, a segmented body divided into three regions (head, thorax, and abdomen), one pair of antennae and, usually, wings. Grasshoppers, moths, dragonflies, butterflies, ants, beetles, and bees are all forms of insects.

This is a cricket. You can often hear them in the warm summer months.
Camouflaged Insect

Some insects protect themselves by blending in with their environment so their enemies won't see them. This is called camouflaging.

Insects live in every type of habitat imaginable except for the middle of the ocean. You can find them from the top of mountains to underground caves, deserts, rivers, fields, and forests. They have even been in space (Biosatellite II orbited the earth with fungus gnats, roaches and wasps). Other insects live in or on plant leaves, stems, or roots. Insects are probably crawling through your house right now!
