Teaching Practice:
Space Exploration: Case Based Pedagogy

INTRODUCTION

The science lesson videotaped for this exhibit on exemplary middle school teaching was the first one in a unit on the solar system. Prior to this day's activities, students in this New Hampshire middle school had already participated in a "hands-on" activity in which they learned how big the solar system is by shrinking it to the length of a football field. The students in Mr. Baldasaro's science class were now learning about space exploration missions through a video downloaded from a NASA web site. During the last part of this taped lesson, which occured in a block scheduled class, the students began constructing paper models of the solar system.
