Teaching Practice Finding the Words to Change the World ASSESSMENT
PERSUASIVE WRITING RUBRIC
I created this rubric based on class discussions surrounding the elements of powerful persuasion within FDR's Declaration of War. After students critiqued FDR's speech, they determined elements of persuasion that FDR didn't use, but that they felt were important. Students used this rubric to assess student work that they found online, work of their peers, and finally, their own persuasive pieces.
AD CAMPAIGNING: PEER ASSESSMENT RUBRIC
After the students had completed their ad campaigns, they assessed the work of their peer groups and themselves with these rubrics. I told them before they selected their groups at the start of this project that they would assess their groups' process. I stressed the importance of writing comments for each grade they gave. This was an effective tool, as the students were the most accurate observers of how their groups functioned. I assured my students that I would be the only person to see their assessments, and the feedback I received was quite honest and insightful.
