About ALTEC:
Advanced Learning Technologies

ALTEC MISSION

The Advanced Learning Technologies (ALTEC) project at the University of Kansas is part of the Center for Research on Learning. ALTEC utilizes the most advanced and innovative technologies available to improve teaching and learning.

Faculty and students in ALTEC come from a range of disciplines and programs, including the School of Education, the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, the School of Engineering, and the School of Fine Arts. This collection of talent gives ALTEC a wide range of capabilities including advanced networking and telecommunication expertise, instructional design, data harvesting and warehousing, distance education experience, and programming.

ALTEC is committed to the development of new technologies to empower learners of all types and ages, and will continue to redefine the learning experience through innovative resources.

ALTEC seeks to partner with anyone who recognizes the tremendous capabilities available through electronic strategies for dissemination, communication, and collaboration. We provide support in the development of the initiative, interpreting the intent of the content authors with the latest in design, development, and delivery. ALTEC will continue to maintain its partnership with an individual project through the contribution of specific resources required through the difference phases of implementation including design, development, maintenance, and evaluation.

Two of the larger projects at ALTEC include the High Plains R*TEC (HPR*TEC), and PT3.org, part of the Preparing Tomorrow's Teachers to Use Technology. Both projects are federal initiatives.

ALTEC's goal is to further the advancement of learning technologies for people of all ages, and to redefine the learning experience.

Here are three of our highest profile leadership programs:

1. HPR*TEC http://www.hprtec.org

The HPR*TEC mission is to help teachers and other educators create, share, or find solutions to problems they encounter when integrating technology into education. Use our free site to network with other teachers, learners, and planners through a unique system supporting collaboration and resource sharing.

On our Web site teachers and students will find a combination of development and collaboration tools and resources, designed for online access, that address the problems teachers face daily. They will support attempts to integrate technology into education as well as resources for carrying out professional growth and development. Over 3 million teachers and students interact with HPR*TEC resources monthly.

As one of 10 R*TECs funded by the U.S. Department of Education, we want to be a part of your network for solving the problems you encounter while integrating technology into education.

2. PT3 http://www.pt3.org

The Preparing Tomorrow?s Teachers to Use Technology (PT3) Project goal is to strengthen teacher preparation programs to provide high quality instruction using, and in the use of, advanced information technologies. We work to carry out the goal of PT3 through our catalyst and supplemental projects designed to energize and support a community of learners in teacher preparation programs. In our Catalyst grant we work with partners from the teacher preparation programs in the five state region of Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska. Collectively, the projects: Integrate telecommunication technologies into both the content and process of education to foster collaboration, outreach to over 300 PT3 grants funded by the U.S. Department of Education, and grow the national PT3 presence through the development of resources and facilitation of the national intranet for grantees.

3. LAN http://lan.altec.org

The Learning Associates Network provides teachers with a way to further contribute to the demand for shared knowledge, to guide others through the myths and promises of technology, and to share simple and effective ways to begin--and continue. Teacher-leaders are encouraged to join the Network and make your lessons learned available to others.

The Learning Associates Network is designed to:

• Promote teachers who are leading the way with effective integration techniques for technology and project-based learning

• Offer teachers a venue to conduct professional development workshops for others

• Provide a vital network and support structure for teachers who share similar work and teaching strategies

The Learning Associates Network has just initiated its first cadre of approximately 100 associates.
