Teaching Practice:
The Changing Course of Summer Camps: Going with the Flow

INTRODUCTION

Contrary to popular opinion, Camp Tech is not an oxymoron. At Camp Tech, nature fuses with technology to provide an extremely diverse camp filled with all of the traditional camp activities and the comforts that only technology can afford.

Imagine arriving at a 4H Campground in Rock Springs, KS, where you are surrounded by rolling plains and all of the bugs that inhabit Kansas in August. Yet at this camp, you will also find an air-conditioned Education Building with a T1 cable line and each room overflowing with computers. Back at the lodge different teams, each consisting of three students and one teacher, are checking into their hotel-like rooms, which hold six people and have two bathrooms. Yes, technology has even changed summer camp.

For the next three days, these teams are going to get the full experience of this new kind of camp. By the time the closing session begins, students, along with their teachers, will have learned a surprising amount of technology and leadership skills that they will take back to their classroom, so they can turn the school year’s upcoming curricula into an exciting series of discoveries.
