Over the past year and a half, much attention has been given to how education leaders around the country are progressing on the new goals and requirements outlined in the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB).
With the passage of NCLB, the State Education Technology Directors Association (SETDA), the principal association representing the state directors for educational technology, has been working to provide assistance to states in implementing NCLB, particularly Title II, Part D which outlines goals and objectives for effectively using education technology to improve student learning across the United States.
SETDA hosted a National Leadership Institute where state participants worked hand-in-hand with content experts and the key people from the U.S. Department of Education to produce the SETDA National Leadership Institute Toolkit - States Helping States to Implement No Child Left Behind. See the next section of this exhibit for more details.
SETDA is also involved in the development of the National Education Technology Plan and the Partnership for 21st Century Skills. SETDA also strives to assist and guide education technology leaders by:
- Analyzing trends among states
- Collecting data across states including the identification of a set of common data elements to help states comply with NCLB requirements.
- Providing opportunities to exchange ideas with other education technology experts during monthly "Expert Talks" and "Tech Talks" as well as participation in a Speakers Bureau and the SETDA Book Club.
- Hosting two national meetings for state directors each year, the SETDA Annual Convocation and the SETDA National Leadership Institute.
SETDA builds partnerships and dialog opportunities with the corporate community including its R & D Roundtables, regular meetings where state leaders engage in a dialogue with the corporate community about product development and discuss opportunities for learning through emerging technologies. This year, SETDA will host its first annual Emerging Technologies Forum, a series of strategic sessions with corporate partners to discuss and shape new technologies not yet on the market.
SETDA works in partnership with the U.S. Department of Education, education associations and the corporate community. Its founding partners include ISTE, CoSN, FETC, the R*TECs and CCSSO. Key SETDA platinum sponsors include: Apple Computer, IBM, Microsoft, Pearson Education Technology, Surf Control, and Texas Instruments.
