(Re)Designing Learning Environments:
School of Environmental Studies

INTRODUCTION

Opened in 1995, next to the Minnesota Zoo, the School of Environmental Studies (SES) is an 11th/12th grade "high school of choice" in Apple Valley, Minnesota.

SES exemplifies the benefits of a small school environment, an interdisciplinary, project-based learning curriculum, and a strong connection to community resources.

"A lot of kids are changed by coming here," says student Mark LaCroix.

Students who may not have been particularly interested in school find that learning can be fascinating and fun.

"You'll begin to love learning, and it'll just all come to you," LaCroix says.
