Teaching Practice:
A Seed By Any Other Name ...

INTRODUCTION

In this study of growth over time, students will discover the many ways new plants can grow (from seeds, bulbs, roots and cuttings), observing the life cycle and structure of plants and the changes that occur as they grow and develop. They will use calendars, journals and digital cameras to organize observations, discover conditions necessary for growth and consider their own influence on it. Students will learn proper names for plant parts and make observations/comparisons about a variety of seeds and plants.

Using Kid Pix Studio Deluxe, the students will create a slide show illustrating the life cycle of a plant and present to an audience. Students will also us the writing process to create first fact, then fiction stories about plants. Students will end the unit by illustrating one way a plant can reproduce itself using Kid Pix to create an animated sequence. Teachers may extend or compact this unit by adjusting the time between the plantings and including/deleting disciplines.
