Teaching Practice:
The Butterfly Catcher

INTRODUCTION

This unit is designed to help students understand the life cycle of a butterfly through hands-on activities, literature, cooperative groups, and direct instruction. Using an in class butterfly house students will observe and record through digital photos the life cycle of the butterfly as they transform from caterpillars to butterflies.

Through a WebQuest students will identify the parts of a butterfly’s body, the life cycle of a butterfly, and the differences between the Monarch, Peacock, and Five Bar Sword Tail butterflies. Students will create and present to the class a PowerPoint presentation on one of the above butterflies. This unit will take approximately 10-15 days to complete.
